Mortimer Adler, ed., The Great Books of the Western World [1990]

332 entries: 301 monographical, 31 otherwise

Unranked—arranged roughly chronologically

The Great Books of the Western World's first edition, 1952, is more common and well-known than the 1990 second. However, our Guidelines mandate the latest or last version of a list. Note that Hutchins had passed away in 1977; while he was still credited for his work on the project, he of course was not directly involved in any changes made for the second edition.

The first and second volumes of the 1990 set are Adler's Syntopicon: An Index to the Great Ideas. This is not considered part of the list, though Charles Van Doren includes it in his Joy of Reading. The 1952 set had Robert Hutchins' The Great Conversation as the first volume, followed by the two volumes of the Syntopicon; it is included in the '90 set, not numbered.

The Comparison of Two Editions of the Great Books of the Western World found at the (defunct) web site, Great Books of the Western World does not include Racine's Phèdre in the 1990 set. Other tables of contents, such as at Wikipedia, do include it, and I have personally checked a copy of the set held by the Emory University libraries to confirm that that play is included.
