The Short List

Unlike the master list, this shorter list is not split into monographical and non-monographical works. Since most of the lists documented at Greater Books do not rank their entries (indeed, many of them are not lists at all, but books from which a list has been derived) we only present these highest-tally works chronologically. This site's primary concern is to document lists that match certain descriptive criteria. It does not constitute any sort of endorsement of the "great books" movement or any similar educational program. Moreover, this site does not want to be associated with the excessive number of ranked lists about all sorts of subjects currently found online (generally in the form of "click bait") and increasingly in print publications as well.
